SYNOPSIS
Maladie keeps Dr. Hague captive in a remote clearing, forcing him to dig a deep hole while she torments him psychologically. She mocks his scientific certainty, his obsession with the Galanthi, and his need for validation. Hague, exhausted and terrified, digs as she circles him like a predator, her mood swinging between gleeful cruelty and eerie calm.
Across London, Lord Massen quietly escalates anti‑Touched sentiment. By negotiating with the Beggar King, he ensures that Purist gangs receive names, addresses, and targets. Violence spreads rapidly through the city. Homes are vandalised, shops destroyed, and families terrorised. Among the places attacked is Horatio’s house, forcing him to flee with Katherine and Isaiah as Purists set the building ablaze.
Horatio brings his family to the Orphanage, where Annie and Su Ping let them inside despite Lavinia’s new restrictions. In the quiet aftermath, Horatio confides in Amalia. He admits he loves both her and his wife, and that the chaos outside has made every choice feel impossible. Amalia listens, conflicted, but says nothing.
Using Nancy’s death as justification, Lavinia orders armed guards to surround the Orphanage. No one inside is allowed to leave. She frames it as protection, but her tone makes it clear: this is containment. While explaining her new rules to Amalia, Lavinia suddenly realises that Lucy’s destructive turn might be capable of breaking the Galanthi’s shell — and, in her view, ending the “plague” of the Touched once and for all.
In prison, Lavinia visits Lucy. She tells her that destroying the Galanthi will “cure” her deadly turn, freeing her from the guilt of every life she has taken. Lucy, desperate for redemption, agrees. She escapes custody and travels to Lavinia’s mines, slipping past guards who assume she is still locked away.
Deep underground, Lucy confronts the Galanthi’s shimmering shell. Tremors ripple through the cavern as she unleashes her turn, striking the shell with explosive force. Cracks spread across its surface. The tremors intensify, shaking the city above. Streets split open. Buildings collapse. Panic spreads as London begins to fall apart.
At the Orphanage, Amalia and Penance feel the tremors and realise something catastrophic has happened. They race toward the mines, fighting through debris and terrified crowds. Underground, the Galanthi’s shell finally breaks open. A small Galanthi — fragile, glowing, and new-born — falls from the shattered casing.
Lucy picks it up, trembling. Lavinia orders her to kill it. Lucy hesitates, torn between Lavinia’s promise of a cure and the living creature in her hands. Before she can decide, the cavern begins to collapse. Rocks fall, the ground splits, and the entire mine shakes violently as it cave collapses around them.
CONTINUITY
Amalia continues to mention future events including the rise of The Beatles in the 1960s and Agatha Christie’s legacy as an author.
