SYNOPSIS
In 1896, Dr. Hague presents his controversial thesis to a council of physicians, insisting that voices of the dead can be heard through London’s new telephone network. The council rejects his claims, noting he has never heard a voice himself — even after his mother’s recent death — and expels him from the Royal Medical Society. Later, alone in his home, Hague begs the telephones lining his walls for someone to sing to him. When the Galanthi passes overhead, the phones ring, and Hague breaks down as he hears his mother’s voice.
In 1899, one day after Maladie’s supposed execution, Amalia surveys the sudden formation of soldiers across London’s rooftops. Beneath the city, Beth watches the excavation around the Galanthi as tremors shake the earth. Above ground, Penance, Su Ping, and Bonfire search coffins for clues and uncover a corpse embedded with electrical components.
Amalia approaches the soldiers and is overwhelmed by flashbacks of her past life as the Stripe. She lashes out at a soldier and later punches a wall until the visions subside. At the police precinct, Mundi supervises families identifying victims from the hanging. Nancy finds her mother among the dead, but Mundi stops her from removing the pink rag from the body. Tremors strike again as Bessie accuses the police of failing the Touched.
Mundi brings evidence about the real Effie Boyle to the new superintendent, who dismisses it and threatens to expose Mundi’s private life if he speaks publicly. Another tremor rattles the station. At the orphanage, Penance obsesses over Maladie’s death and the lives lost, while Amalia insists Maladie chose her fate. Penance pushes Amalia to reveal the truth about the Galanthi to the others.
Amalia reluctantly explains her identity — a soldier from the future inhabiting a dead baker’s body — and reveals the Galanthi’s mission. The group reacts with fear and confusion as tremors intensify. Amalia suffers more flashbacks and retreats to her office, where Horatio tries to calm her. Their moment turns intimate, but Horatio stops her, insisting she doesn’t understand what he wants. Penance interrupts, and Amalia refocuses on their investigation.
Elsewhere, Hugo complains about flooding at the Ferryman’s Club. Augie arrives, shaken and bleeding from a fight, and tries to confess a secret. Tremors interrupt him, and Hugo shifts focus to planning a ball to distract London from recent horrors.
Lord Massen returns home, where a maid accidentally enters a forbidden child’s bedroom filled with medical equipment. After dismissing her, Massen sits alone, grieving. Beechum comments on animals reacting to the tremors, but Massen insists God has no interest in revealing His intentions.
On patrol, Mundi encounters people dressed as Maladie, dancing with ropes around their necks. A message on the wall reads: “I will make the Heavens tremble and the Earth will be shaken out of its place.”
At the orphanage, Nimble writes “Nimble Jack’s Tales of the Touched,” hoping to give street kids a role model better than Maladie. Bonfire admits she followed Maladie for money — and because Maladie was her kind of leader.
In the workshop, Horatio examines the shock‑trooper corpse and finds a clockgear with Chinese ideograms. Su Ping identifies it as the work of Madame Tam. Amalia, Penance, and Su Ping visit Tam’s shop, but tremors trigger another flashback, sending Amalia wandering. Myrtle tries to join them but is stopped; later she dresses in Amalia’s clothes and ventures outside with her electric umbrella. A cloaked figure follows her.
Myrtle witnesses Bessie and Nancy attacking a Touched girl. She intervenes, fights them off, and rescues the victim. The cloaked figure — Lucy — reveals herself as Myrtle breaks down. Lucy later uses her destructive turn on Nancy’s corpse in front of witnesses.
Amalia’s flashbacks lead her to the Thames, then to a door she recognises from her visions. Inside Hague’s home, she and Penance discover clocks containing photos of dead men and a pamphlet about Hague’s thesis. A mysterious woman calls Amalia, asking if the Stripe ever stopped believing this world was a simulation — and hints Amalia is not the only one who “hitched a ride.”
A robot dog attacks Penance, and the two women fight it through Hague’s burning home. Penance electrocutes the creature, which flees. Amalia collapses, overwhelmed by flashbacks. Outside, she breaks down, fearing she is losing her mind and that magic may vanish when the Galanthi emerges. Penance steadies her, reminding her they have a mission to save the world.
At the precinct, Mundi files away Maladie’s case just as officers bring in Lucy, restraining her in a cell. Meanwhile, Bessie vows revenge for Nancy’s death. Hague returns to his ruined home, answers a ringing phone, and hears singing — then turns to see Maladie sitting in his window.
