SYNOPSIS
Chapter One: Stripe
Far from Victorian London, the episode opens in a bleak future where Earth is a battlefield. A squad of Planetary Defence Coalition soldiers parachutes into a ruined city to retake a research station from a rival faction, FreeLife. They capture the lone survivor, Major Greenbone, and push deeper inside.
The soldiers discuss “spores” — alien traits some humans have manifested — hinting at a long war involving beings called Galanthi. Inside the station, they discover a garden and, beyond it, a horrific sight: the research team who once befriended a Galanthi have been murdered and hung above it, tortured emotionally by FreeLife.
The Galanthi is preparing to leave Earth. The PDC speculate it intends to return with reinforcements.
Greenbone reveals a nuclear strike is imminent. Chaos erupts, and every soldier dies except one: a hardened, cynical veteran known only as Stripe. Grief‑stricken, she overdoses on narcotics in the garden. As she dies, the Galanthi’s ethereal form passes through her, absorbing her persona. Together, Stripe and the alien escape through a portal.
Chapter Two: Molly
Back in 1890s London, a woman named Molly — later known as Amalia True — works as a baker. She longs for a gentle man named Varnum Dale but marries Thomas True, a butcher, out of financial desperation. Her marriage is defined by long hours, miscarriages, and mounting debt.
Thomas dies, leaving Molly with his ill mother and a crushing burden. She learns Varnum is now married and expecting a child, closing the door on the life she once hoped for.
In 1893, overwhelmed by grief and circumstance, Molly walks into the Thames and drowns — at the exact moment the Galanthi flies over London. A spore enters her body, and Stripe’s persona replaces Molly’s. The woman who rises from the river is not Molly True, but Stripe, wearing Molly’s face.
Chapter Three: The Madwoman in the Thames
Authorities believe Molly attempted suicide and commit her to an asylum. Stripe — now trapped in Molly’s body — struggles to understand her purpose in this time period. She is the only person in 1893 who knows what the Galanthi truly are.
In the asylum, she meets Sarah, another spored woman whose mind has fractured. Stripe hides behind Molly’s name, “Amalia True,” and begins learning Victorian manners and speech to blend in.
During treatment for a laceration, she and Dr. Horatio Cousens discover they both have powers. They wonder how many others were touched by the Galanthi.
Dr. Edmund Hague arrives, eager to study the Touched. Amalia feigns ignorance and encourages Sarah to be honest with him — a betrayal that will haunt them both.
Eventually, Lavinia Bidlow finds Amalia and offers her leadership of the orphanage she intends to build for the Touched. Amalia will share control with another spored woman: Penance Adair.
Chapter Four: True
Back in 1896, Amalia, Auggie, and Annie fight soldiers beneath their base, searching for the Galanthi’s location. Amalia falls into a sinkhole and is separated from the others. In the tunnels, she finally finds the Galanthi.
As she questions it, the cavern shakes, and Amalia is thrown into a cascade of visions — memories, futures, and moments she cannot yet understand. Myrtle appears in one vision, speaking for the Galanthi: “Oh, Amalia. This is a long time from that little cave. This, I will need you to forget.”
When Amalia regains consciousness, Hague’s masked men attack her. She escapes and returns to the orphanage, where Penance has just returned from her failed attempt to save Maladie.
Amalia decides it’s time to tell the truth. She reveals her real name — Zephyr Alexis Navine — and admits she is not from this time. Penance embraces her as one of her inventions flies overhead, a small moment of hope amid the chaos.
TRIVIA
This episode runs for nearly 25 minutes before returning to Victorian London. It never explains why we’ve shifted or what’s going on; the audience figures it out as they go.
Claudia Black is no stranger to science fiction, having first appeared on Farscape and Stargate SG-1, amongst many other roles. Her performance in this episode is stunning, a true standout.
After this episode, the series went on temporary hiatus. In between, news concerning creator Joss Whedon led to him leaving the series and the show was cancelled. The six episodes remaining would never air on HBO Max, instead debuting on streaming some time later. As of writing, the final six episodes are still unaired and missing from streaming in the US.
CONTINUITY
This episode changes the entire landscape of the series and it’s trajectory in it’s opening twist. Although a time is not given, it’s generally believed that the first half of the episode is set in 2192, in the 22nd Century.
