SYNOPSIS
Augie escapes the carriage transporting him to the asylum. Terrified and furious, he unleashes his turn, killing the chauffeurs with a surge of power he can no longer restrain. Shaken by what he has done — and by what Lavinia forced him into — he disappears into the chaos of London.
Mundi and Swann bring Lord Massen’s daughter to the Orphanage, revealing the truth long buried beneath Massen’s political crusade: she is alive, Touched, and hidden away for years. Her presence exposes the hypocrisy at the heart of Massen’s anti‑Touched campaign and deepens the mystery of his motives.
Meanwhile, Horatio tracks the “puppet‑man” from Isaiah’s dream. His search leads him to a puppeteer who is secretly working with the Purists. Horatio witnesses a clandestine meeting between the Purists and the Beggar King, confirming that Massen’s weapons are being distributed across London. In a burst of rage and desperation, Horatio attacks. He severely scars the Beggar King and destroys the shipment of weapons, striking a blow against Massen’s growing militia.
With Swann’s new title granting him access to London’s elite, Harriet reaches the city’s oligarchy. She confronts them directly, arguing against a proposed law targeting the Touched. Her calm authority and moral clarity sway the room, preventing the decree from passing and buying the Orphanage precious time.
At Hague’s laboratory, Penance uncovers the truth behind the voice Hague believes is his mother. The “mother” is not a ghost — she is another time‑traveller, an entity of pure energy who arrived with the Galanthi but without a physical body. Unable to survive without a host, she manipulated Hague into capturing the unconscious bodies of Amalia and the Galanthi, intending to kill one and use it as a vessel.
While unconscious, Amalia enters a liminal space where she confronts both the dead Molly and a previous version of herself — the Stripe who still carries the guilt of failing to save her loved ones in the future. The two selves clash, each blaming the other, each trapped in trauma. Amalia fights through the memories until she remembers Penance: her anchor, her partner, the person who keeps her grounded. The realization breaks the cycle.
The confrontation is revealed to be a test orchestrated by the Galanthi, teaching Amalia through experience rather than words. She awakens with renewed clarity.
Together, Amalia and Penance battle Hague’s robotic henchman, the doctor himself, and the energy‑based time‑traveller. They destroy the machinery, free the Galanthi, and end Hague’s twisted experiment.
As the dust settles, Lavinia and her forces arrive — too late to control the situation, but determined to reclaim power.
