SYNOPSIS
Sarah emerges from the Thames, soaked, disoriented, and stripped of her Maladie persona. Her memories return in fragments, revealing the life she lived before madness and transformation. Drawn by instinct, she visits her abusive husband, hoping for comfort or clarity. Instead, she discovers the truth: he was the one who had her institutionalized. When he begins abusing her again, Sarah snaps. In a moment of trauma and fury, she kills him — reclaiming her agency but losing any chance at reconciliation with her past.
Unbeknownst to Augie, Lavinia survives the cave collapse. She crawls through the sewers, dragging herself over stone and mud until she is found and taken back to the Bidlow mansion. Her body is broken, but her resolve remains intact.
At the Orphanage, Horatio makes a startling discovery: Isaiah is Touched. The boy can see other people’s dreams, and one vision terrifies him — a “puppet‑man” who intends to attack the Orphanage. Horatio follows a nearby puppeteer and witnesses a clandestine meeting between the Purists and the Beggar King, confirming Isaiah’s vision is real.
Elsewhere, Hague receives a phone call. His mother’s voice — or what he believes to be her — tells him to go to Lavinia’s mansion, where a fundraiser lunch for the Orphanage is about to take place. The call pulls him back into Lavinia’s orbit.
Augie invites Penance to the event, hoping to seize control of all Bidlow holdings, including the Orphanage. He plans to publicly reveal himself as Touched, believing it will shift the balance of power and protect the people Lavinia seeks to contain. But before he can make his announcement, Hague interrupts. He convinces Penance to leave with him, promising to reveal the truth about the telephone lines and the voices that have been haunting him.
Later, Lavinia has her brother committed to an asylum, eliminating the threat he poses to her authority and ensuring he cannot expose her anti‑Touched agenda.
Disillusioned with her life at the Orphanage — and shaken by recent events — Myrtle quietly leaves and joins Maladie’s cult, seeking belonging in the only place that seems to understand her pain.
Meanwhile, Swann and Mundi continue their investigation into the rising violence and political manipulation surrounding the Touched. Their search leads them to a devastating revelation: Lord Massen’s daughter, long believed dead, is alive — and she is Touched.
