Speaking at a fan event, Mercedes McNab was more than willing to share more behind-the-scenes secrets from the series finale, ‘Not Fade Away’. She revealed that the death of Wesley was a late decision – with another character originally due to be killed off instead!
“One of us had to go!” she noted. “You’ve got to have some drama in the show; it’s the season finale. Originally it was Gunn! I don’t know what J. did to get into the favours of the writers again. [Laughs]. But no, originally it was Gunn and then it switched to Wesley for some reason.”
But while we were all still pouring over finale secrets, Garth Ancier, the head of the WB, confirmed that he was looking into Angel television movies. “We have an offer on the table to Joss to do movies,” he told journalists. “When Joss and David Boreanaz are both interested in doing it at the same time, I’m sure we will be doing Angel movies. Certainly Joss would like to. David will take a bit more coaxing, but I think he will do it.”
Coincidentally, the WB’s overall ratings had dissipated when the Network cancelled Angel and Ancier also blamed 20th Century Fox Television – who apparently wanted a quick answer as to the show’s renewal.
“They had pushed for an early decision on whether the show should come back or not. Had they not pushed for the early renewal, or, conversely, if we had said, ‘You know what? Let’s wait till we get to the scheduling room in May and decide then, the show may or may not have been back. But I think we would have had the opportunity to discuss it. I think the mistake that was made is that between us and 20th, we didn’t wait until May. We just made the decision early based on their request.”
Ancier denied allegations that Angel had been moved aside for a new vampire-led drama – indeed a remake of Dark Shadows went to pilot – but it failed miserably.
