SYNOPSIS
In their childhood, young Augie proudly showed Lavinia a shed where he studied bird anatomy, hoping she would understand his fascination. Instead, Lavinia was disturbed by what she called his “abnormal” behaviour. She forced him to burn the shed down, insisting he must destroy anything that made him different. Traumatized and enraged, Augie pushed her — an accident that left Lavinia permanently paralyzed. The moment becomes the unspoken foundation of their fractured relationship.
After the cave collapse, Augie pulls Lavinia from the rubble and helps her reach a rail tunnel for safety. Her wheelchair is damaged, blocking her escape. As tremors echo through the tunnel, Lavinia reveals she has always known Augie is Touched. Shocked by her hatred of the Touched — and by the years of manipulation now laid bare — Augie leaves her lying on the ground, trapped by a steam engine and unable to move.
Elsewhere in the collapsing mines, Amalia and Penance search through smoke and debris until they find Lucy, gravely injured. With her dying breath, Lucy tells them the Galanthi survived and is roaming freely through the cave. Amalia and Penance hold her as she dies, shaken by the consequences of Lavinia’s plan.
Above ground, Hugo Swann receives word that his father has died. In the midst of London’s chaos, he unexpectedly becomes a duke — a title he never wanted and is ill‑prepared to carry.
Maladie, meanwhile, uses the hole Hague began digging to access London’s sewers. There she confronts Amalia and Penance, emerging from the darkness with manic clarity. Maladie reveals she has been hearing the Galanthi’s voice in her head ever since it arrived in London — a constant presence guiding her, tormenting her, and calling to her. She can find the creature easily.
As they navigate the tunnels, Penance realizes the truth behind Amalia’s mission: once she finds the Galanthi, Amalia intends to return to the future. The revelation devastates her. In a quiet, painful moment, Penance says goodbye, choosing to stay behind rather than follow Amalia into a destiny she cannot share.
Amalia and Maladie continue deeper into the sewers, following tremors and echoes of the creature’s presence. Their chase leads them beneath the River Thames, where the tunnels widen into a cavern flooded with pale light. There, at last, they meet the Galanthi.
