0:02 : The Slayer introduction is attached to this episode.
0:18 : Jeremy Ratchford plays Lyle Gorch. The character turns up again – without a brother, but with a wife – in season three’s Homecoming. He starred as the X-Men character Banshee in Generation X (1996) and was a series regular for all seven seasons of CBS’ Cold Case.
0:26 : The mall Buffy and Joyce are shopping at is Sherman Oaks Galleria in Los Angeles.
2:19 : Brie McCaddin plays the unnamed ‘Cute Girl.’
4:10 : Buffy once again slips up and mentions saving the world from evil. Joyce catches it and dismisses it, thanks to her superhuman denial defence shield. She’ll have no choice but to accept it in the season finale.

6:20 : Mr. Whitmore is played by actor Rick Zieff. He has quite the prolific career as a voice actor, greatly associated with Tom and Jerry amongst others.
7:00 : Cordelia’s ‘contribution’ to the safe-sex discussion (which gloriously has Willow embarrassed and nervous), implies greatly that she has already begun having regular sex… although it can’t be with Xander as implied, since he loses his virginity in The Zeppo.
7:27 : Willow notices, once again, that Cordelia and Xander’s behaviour is more snarky than usual.
8:58 : Willow mentions that her egg, like her, is Jewish. It’s the first time it’s mentioned.
9:48 : From Texas, the Gorch Brothers have quite the reputation. It turns out that they massacred everybody in a Mexican village in 1886 – before they became vampires! They’re based on the characters of the same name in 1969’s The Wild Bunch.
11:22 : Tector Gorch is played by James Parks. He followed up Buffy with guest roles in Stargate and The X-Files, but ultimately found success on the big screen in films such as Kill Bill and Django Unchained, beginning a lifelong friendship with film director Quentin Tarantino.

11:36 : Tector mentions Angelus by name and also seems to recognise him by sight. It seems that somewhere along the way, the Gorch brothers spent some time with Angelus.
13:07 : Buffy’s egg hatches and tendrils snake out towards her…
14:14 : Lyle and Tector were turned at the same time, or by the other, presumably. Did they go looking for vampirism? How likely is it that they were turned separately?
15:45 : Unless Buffy’s egg can turn by itself, the hole it made with it’s tendrils is self-sealing…

17:41 : A really funny moment: Giles’ panicked reaction as Xander drops his egg…
18:39 : And Giles gives a perfect line to Cordy: “I think we should give him a few hours before we give up on him completely.”
20:11 : Angel tells Buffy in this conversation that he cannot have children, being dead and all. This is perfectly accurate – except when mystical entities need them to, such as season three of Angel and Connor.
20:43 : Buffy tells Angel that all she sees of the future is him. It’s way too late to put this one back in the box, folks, and it goes downhill from here with the speed of a lost frigate train.
21:22 : The Night Watchman, ironically knocked unconscious by Mr. Whitmore, is played by actor Eric Whitmore. He passed in 2022.
24:44 : The Bezoar creature that Buffy killed doesn’t have any of the tentacles used to ensnare her the night before. Also, how quick to these things mature and hatch?

29:08 : In the classroom behind Willow, the words ‘Posting Board’ is written in chalk on the blackboard…
29:52 : Willow knocks Xander unconscious with the science lab’s microscope. He’ll be knocked out by the same thing in Lover’s Walk.
31:09 : The library sign has a message on it, matching the ‘Posting Board’ scribbled on the blackboard. This one says that the official website would be online soon for fans to discuss the show.
35:55 : Danny Strong makes a brief cameo as Jonathan – however his name is misspelt ‘Johnathan’ in the end credits.
41:50 : Sure, Xander’s explanation of a gas leak helps explain to the crowd the why of their unconsciousness, but not the how. How exactly does he explain everybody digging up demon eggs in the school basement?
