0:02 : Instead of the usual “Previously On…” Anthony Stewart Head says “Last week on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
3:40 : Sam Zabuto is the name of Kendra’s Watcher. This is the first confirmation we have that there is more than one Watcher on duty at once, with others watching Potential Slayers in case of activation.
3:57 : Kendra says she has no last name. In later years, long after the character’s death, she would be given the surname ‘Young’, which completely contradicts Kendra’s statement here. She obviously has no reason to lie.
4:07 : “Back off Pink Ranger!” – Not just a funny line, but a cute in-joke: Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s stunt-double at the time, Sophia Crawford, had previously worked on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, as Pink Ranger Kimberley’s stunt person in the morphed costume.
5:15 : A great line of exposition from Giles: “Clearly it doesn’t matter how long you were gone. You were physically dead, thus causing the activation of the next slayer.”

5:51 : Kendra’s Watcher has told her that “A very dark power is about to rise in Sunnydale.” She’s referring to Drusilla presumably…
5:51 : Buffy repeats the line back to Kendra when she welcomes her back to Sunnydale in Becoming.
6:30 : Kendra knows about Angelus’ history, thanks presumably due to the Handbook and the training she’s been given. Quite why Buffy didn’t get all this is unknown.
14:22 : In fact, in what now seems to be an error, Giles had said there was no handbook in Never Kill A Boy on the First Date…
14:22 : …but he did hand her what in Last Gleaming will be revealed to be said Handbook in the pilot – it’s the VAMPYR book, never seen again in the series.
15:06 : Giles says that Buffy had to give up cheerleading – “It’s an amusing story, actually…” We saw Buffy quit the cheerleading squad after Catherine Madison attacked them in Witch.
17:29 : Finally, after nearly half a season bickering and sniping at each other, all that tension comes to a head and Xander and Cordelia share their first kiss. Both blame their dangerous situation rather than their feelings for it, however.
19:16: Oz’s hair has changed colour from red to darker brown…
19:16 : …which is a give-away clue for whenever Seth Green is filming other projects. Next season, at one point, it goes blue!
20:48 : Jonathan is grabbed by Patrice – although Danny Strong is listed as ‘Hostage Kid’ in the end credits.

22:01 : Xander tells Kendra that he likes Slayer women. He’s not wrong: he’ll also be attracted to Faith from the minute he meets her.
22:35 : Buffy asks Xander what’s up with him and bug people, referring to the Praying Mantis from Teacher’s Pet.
26:07 : Kendra, just like Spike, is surprised that Buffy has friends and school…
27:52 : Indeed, Kendra says her family takes the calling to become the Slayer as a sacred destiny. We never find out quite who her people are, but she’s been in the care of her Watcher since a young age. This may explain why she doesn’t know her surname. Perhaps it was removed to protect her family?

29:00 : Although certainly not intended in the context it will later be used in, Buffy tells Kendra that she has potential, which angers the newcomer. If you had spent your whole life as a Potential and someone whom you replaced said that, you’d be angry too.
30:03 : Angel teases Spike over Drusilla and Spike falls for it every time. Spike’s jealousy for the relationship between Angel and Dru will rear it’s head later this season, starting with Innocence, and continue right the way through to their adventures together in Angel Season Five, where instead of Drusilla, the woman in question is Buffy.
37:14 : This is the first time we see Willow stake a vampire.
37:59 : It’s a well-known fact that Spike was never intended to be the principal villain of the season, and, true to his contract, Spike was due to be killed off in this episode. However, due to Spike’s popularity with viewers, the storyline had to be changed, causing issues for Whedon in rewriting the rest of the season’s intended plot.

40:01 : Oz tells Willow that all monkeys are French. In Buffy’s dream in Surprise, Willow will be seen conversing with a monkey in the language.
40:35 : Unlike the previous scene, which was filmed at Mutant Enemy, this next scene immediately after in the corridor was shot at Torrance High.
41:16 : Cordelia and Xander give into their passion and kiss again, each promising the other that no one else can know. They might want to close the classroom door then…

41:53 : Buffy tells Kendra to avoid any film with Chevy Chase and a talking dog. She’s referring to the film Funny Farm – which Sarah Michelle Gellar also appeared in.
42:45 : Kendra doesn’t hug. Neither will Faith.
42:45 : Kendra will be back in time for the season finale.
43:08 : Drusilla and Spike’s survival is revealed. Spike will remain injured until I Only Have Eyes for You – but he doesn’t tell Drusilla or Angel. In a twisted way, their relationship shifts: she becomes the caregiver to him.
