SYNOPSIS
At Wolfram & Hart, Angel waits in the conference room for his team – but no one arrives. Frustrated, he calls Harmony, who fills him in on recent events. Only one person shows up: Spike. Not exactly the company Angel wanted. As they sit, Angel laments his decision to take over Wolfram & Hart, fearing it led to Fred’s death. He wants to know the Senior Partners’ plans, suspecting they’re already in motion. Spike agrees – they need someone with direct ties to them. That means Eve.
Tracking her down, they find Eve hiding, reluctant to help after Lindsey’s disappearance. Suddenly, the room shakes violently – runes vanish from the walls and doors. Eve panics, thinking Angel betrayed her. The door bursts open, revealing a towering man – but the room is already empty.
In a bar, Lorne drinks away his sorrows, reading the bartender as he sings. Finishing his drink, Lorne steels himself – time to put on the bells and smile and return to the beast.
Angel, Spike, and Eve arrive at Wolfram & Hart. Spike watches Eve while Angel seeks help from Gunn, who remains withdrawn. Angel tries to push him into action.
Elsewhere, Wesley dreams of Fred – alive. He wakes abruptly, scotch glass in hand. Illyria, standing in Fred’s room, notes how long he’s been drinking his “poison.” She finds the world disappointing. Wesley challenges her – if she hates it so much, why hasn’t she left?
Back at Wolfram & Hart, Eve spirals, terrified of dying. Angel and Spike press her for answers. Eve reveals she’s an immortal, born of Wolfram & Hart to serve as their liaison. Angel unknowingly eliminated their only chance at understanding the Senior Partners – Lindsey. He’s not dead, just in hell.
Cut to Lindsey – waking in bed next to a blonde woman. He steps outside, picks up his newspaper like every other neighbour, and returns inside.
At the office, Angel and his team try to determine which hell Lindsey is trapped in. Lorne monitors Eve, reading her to ensure she’s truthful. Gunn arrives – he knows where Lindsey is and how to get him.
In suburban hell, Lindsey quizzes his son on the Constitution. His wife asks him to fetch an oven bulb from the cellar. Hesitant, he eventually complies.
Meanwhile, Gunn, Spike, and Angel retrieve a Camaro SS from the garage – though Angel has yet to drive it. Gunn tosses him the keys. Moments later, the car drives itself, ferrying them toward Lindsey’s “penalty box.”
Illyria and Wesley continue their debate. Wesley insists she could go anywhere, but she remains. She grows frustrated, feeling suffocated by the walls. Wesley leads her elsewhere.
In suburban hell, Angel, Spike, and Gunn reach Lindsey’s house. He doesn’t recognize them – until Angel tears a medallion from his neck. Lindsey collapses, memories flooding back, suspecting Angel is there to kill him. But they’re here to rescue him. Just as they prepare to leave, Lindsey’s false wife emerges – armed. Angel distracts her while Gunn and Spike drag Lindsey toward the exit. But the car is gone. With no choice, they descend into the cellar – despite Lindsey’s protests.
Back at Wolfram & Hart, the massive pursuer reaches the offices. Harmony attempts a futile attack while Lorne and Eve retreat to the lift.
Below Lindsey’s home, the group discovers a torture chamber. They locate the Wrath, a mystical door that serves as their escape route – but it’s locked. A demon appears, and Angel and Spike fight while Gunn shields Lindsey. Gunn spots the medallion Lindsey wore and puts it on – shocking Angel. One must take the place of another. The Wrath opens, and Angel, Spike, and Lindsey jump through. Gunn, left behind, forgets everything.
Eve and Lorne make it to the garage, steal a car, but hear a thud – the return of Angel, Spike, and Lindsey. As they regroup, the large man appears. Eve concedes – her run is over. He hands her papers to sign. Introducing himself as Marcus Hamilton, he is her replacement. Eve, signing away her immortality, reveals this was why she was running.
That night, Wesley leads Illyria to the roof, where she finds relief – the world feels less suffocating. In the offices, Lindsey warns Angel – the apocalypse is already happening. While they’ve been consumed by corporate distractions, they’ve unknowingly become the bad guys.
TRIVIA
The opening credits change for the final time: Mercedes McNab, first seen back in The Harvest, is promoted to series regular as Harmony, whereas Fred’s images on Amy Acker’s title card has been changed to images of Illyria.
Adam Baldwin, like Nathan Fillion as Caleb and Gina Torres as Jasmine, was also a series regular on Firefly.
The cast were filming this episode when the show’s cancellation was announced.
CONTINUITY
Lorne visits a rebuilt Caritas. Lorne was Caritas’ owner from when it was first built until it was destroyed – twice – in season three, first by Gunn’s former gang members and secondly by Holtz. He’ll visit it again in Not Fade Away, and it’s presumably where he tells his tale in Spin the Bottle.
Illyria says she’s been to the world with nothing but shrimp, which is a reference to the “shrimp dimension” that Anya mentioned in Superstar.
Gunn reminds Spike and Angel that, in alternate dimensions, vampires are not affected by the sun, which they first learned while visiting Pylea in Over the Rainbow.
Angel recalls when Holland Manners told him about Hell being on Earth three years before, which happened in Reprise.
