SYNOPSIS
The bus rumbles into town, its passengers draped in modest, old-fashioned clothing, their voices raised in solemn hymn. They move through the small grocery store like ghosts from another time, handing over a list to the shopkeeper, quietly collecting supplies. The tension lingers as local men arrive, taunting them, whispering about the compound where they live, under the leadership of man named Jonas Sparrow. The sheriff intervenes, scattering the troublemakers, but when the bus departs, the grocer notices something unusual – on the back of the list, a desperate plea is scrawled: Save me.
At the Dollhouse, Adelle meets with a senator, agreeing to place an active inside the compound. Meanwhile, Paul Ballard chases his own leads, pushing a photo through federal databases, hunting for the truth buried beneath layers of secrecy.
Dominic voices his doubts about Echo’s suitability for the mission, but Adelle overrides him without hesitation. In the lab, Topher explains the imprint – Echo will see nothing, yet record everything. A human camera. Saunders protests. Adelle dismisses the concern. The risk is acceptable.
At an ATF command center, Boyd watches Sparrow’s followers from afar, listening as authorities lay out their plan. They have 48 hours to justify action against the compound’s leader, Jonas Sparrow. Boyd introduces Echo – now “Esther” – a hitchhiker seeking salvation in Sparrow’s teachings. He drops her off, leaving her to navigate the wary eyes of the congregation.
Jonas approaches. Silent. Patient. She reaches out, touching his face, identifying him with certainty. “Jonas Sparrow. I’d know your face anywhere.” The crowd erupts in murmurs, their faith tipping toward her.
Inside the FBI, Ballard receives disappointing news – his search for Caroline comes up empty.
At the compound, Sparrow interrogates Esther, testing her conviction. She speaks of visions, of divine guidance. He watches her, sceptical, but the congregation clings to every word, convinced of the miracle. Seth, a trusted member, remains unconvinced. He warns Sparrow – something about Esther doesn’t sit right.
Elsewhere, the Dollhouse faces a problem of its own. In the showers, Victor reacts to Sierra with unmistakable interest. Topher, flustered, turns to Saunders. She confirms it’s happening repeatedly. Instinct is overriding conditioning.
Back at the compound, Esther is led deeper inside, introduced to its members. Then the camera feed goes black. Sparrow sits in darkness, observing Esther. He shines a flashlight into her sightless eyes, searching for deception. He loads a gun methodically, asking his questions with unnerving calm—law enforcement? Government? She denies everything. He presses the barrel against her forehead. Silence stretches, unbearable. Finally, convinced, he welcomes her. He kisses her hair as she stares sightlessly into the arsenal before her.
At the FBI, Mellie interrupts Ballard with kindness – a meal, pain meds, distraction. But among the warmth, another clue arrives – a yearbook tape of Caroline.
The ATF team prepares their move. Boyd insists they get Echo out before making their approach. His request is denied. The operation moves forward. As Esther is baptized, gunfire shatters the ceremony. Floodlights blaze. Jonas disappears, descending into the basement. Seth follows, watching as Sparrow arms himself. He hands Seth a weapon. Suspicion lingers in his words as he turns his gaze toward Esther. She denies betraying them. He strikes her. The feed cuts out.
Morning breaks. Esther, bruised, kneels before Sparrow. He sees her survival as providence – proof that their path is righteous. She was blind. Now she sees. A miracle. Boyd pushes further, chasing the sender of the note. The truth is bitter – no one inside ever asked to be saved.
At the compound, Sparrow warns his followers of the inevitable. He does not need to arm them. Fate will protect them. In the FBI office, Ballard watches news coverage of the raid. His eyes lock onto the screen – Caroline.
Boyd retraces the note’s origins, questioning the shopkeeper. He digs deeper, unveiling the real sender. Inside the chapel, Esther reads scripture, unaware of Seth outside siphoning gasoline. Flames lick the walls as Sparrow preaches salvation through fire. As smoke thickens, one woman breaks, desperate to flee. Sparrow stops her. If they believe, the fire cannot harm them.
Boyd’s warning reaches deaf ears. The lead agent prepares for the worst – if Boyd is inside, he should be taken down.
Inside, Sparrow refuses to let them leave. He raises his hand, preparing to strike Esther. She catches his wrist, defiant. She fights. Fire swallows the walls. Chaos erupts. She knocks him unconscious, rallying the others. They run.
Esther returns for a lone boy who refuses to flee. He spits in her face. She decks him. Seth drags him out. As Esther turns, Sparrow rises, gun trained on her. The trigger never pulls. Gunfire rips through his body. Dominic steps from the smoke. He then crashes the butt of his rifle into her skull.
The chapel collapses. Outside, the ATF pulls back. Boyd searches. He finds Esther beneath the wreckage, lifts her, carries her away.
The next morning, Ballard arrives at the ruins, desperate to trace Caroline. He meets resistance. No answers. No warrant.
At the Dollhouse, Adelle orders Victor’s conditioning reinforced. Dominic issues another warning – Echo is problematic. Adelle rejects the concern.
Echo’s treatment ends. As she walks, her eyes lock onto Dominic below. She whispers. “I see perfectly.”
TRIVIA
Chet Grissom, who played the FBI Guy in this episode was previously seen as a Detective on Buffy – who was looking for Eliza Dushku’s Faith in This Year’s Girl and found her (and didn’t realise it) in Who Are You.
CONTINUITY
After Adelle’s refusal to neutralize Echo in Stage Fright Dominic takes matters into his own hands when he refuses to extract Echo and later tries to kill her himself in this episode.
Paul asks Loomis to scan for Caroline’s face from the picture he received in The Target. They also discuss Paul having been shot, as seen in Stage Fright.
Mellie brings Paul “leftover” manicotti. Just like the “leftover” lasagna she offered him in The Target, the tray she brings Paul is full.
Paul receives the video of Caroline Alpha was watching in Ghost.
While discussing the development of Victor’s “man reactions” when viewing Sierra in the showers, Claire and Topher discuss the fact that she wrote a report suggesting that Victor should not continue the Miss Lonely Hearts engagements. Topher’s reaction to Claire’s mention of the report is specifically that “no one reads those,” a fact that will later surface in Omega, ironically pertaining to an engagement with Whiskey.
Victor’s attraction to Sierra, of which the Dollhouse becomes aware in this episode, will make him the prime suspect for Sierra’s rape in Man on the Street.
Victor’s repeated engagement with “Miss Lonely Hearts” will be shown in A Spy in the House of Love and Stop-Loss.
