“In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m the direct sort of person, dear.”
Zoë

Mal‘s unseen assailant is Ephraim Sanda himself — big, righteous, and mean enough to make the Alliance proud. He ties Mal up tight and lays into him, fists and fury, convinced he’s caught himself a Dust Devil. Mal takes the hits, jaw set, eyes burnin’ with the kind of anger that don’t cool easy.

Back at the resort, Zoë steps into Inara’s shuttle and sees the signs — scuffed floor, overturned cushions, the quiet echo of a struggle. She knows what’s happened before she even says it aloud. She gathers the crew and tells them the truth Sanda’s been huntin’: the Dust Devil he wants ain’t Mal.

It’s her.
She says she kept fightin’ after the War ended, callin’ herself a peacemaker, though peace was the last thing she ever found.
Now she means to end this clean.
She sends out an open broadcast, tellin’ Sanda where she’ll surrender — hopin’ he’ll walk straight into the trap she’s settin’.

Sanda arrives with Mal in tow, flanked by armed men. But before the standoff can spark, the sky tears open with fire. Sanda’s ship explodes in a roar of metal and flame — courtesy of the Tactical Drone, whose operator has come lookin’ to settle his own score with Reynolds.

Suddenly, enemies become allies. Mal’s crew and Sanda’s men fight side by side, duckin’ and firin’ as the drone swoops overhead, relentless as judgement. It’s a brutal scrap, but together they bring the machine down, leavin’ it smoulderin’ in the dirt.

When the dust settles, Sanda lets Mal and his people walk. Seems fair enough — until Mal gets back to Serenity and finds the money gone. Sanda’s men lifted it clean.

Inara watches Mal’s face as he takes the news. No anger. No surprise. No heartbreak. She tells him she thinks she knows why — that Mal’s already livin’ his fantasy. That if the others got rich, they might scatter to the winds, and he’d lose the only family he’s got left.
Mal shakes his head. Says he ain’t afraid of losin’ anyone. Says he just knows where he stands in life.
And it ain’t a place of wishes.
CONTINUITY
Zoe admits that she used to be part of the Dust Devils, a notorious terrorist group.
Jayne asks, “So, when are the purple-bellies getting here?” The term “purple-bellies” is slang for Alliance soldiers, named for the purplish armor they wear.
Mal confronts Inara after spotting Simon leaving her shuttle while she was handling business on Pelorum, but she offers no explanation for his visit. This might tie into the subtle Inara subplot hinted at in the DVD commentaries for the episodes Serenity and Out of Gas, as well as her trip to Ariel in the episode of the same name for a medical checkup.
