Season 2, Episode 2

0:01 : The “Into every generation…” introduction is now narrated by Anthony Stewart Head, in character as Giles.

0:52 : Angel mentions how weird rising from his own grave was, which we’ll see in flashback in Angel‘s first season episode The Prodigal.

6:01 : It’s rather charming really, we guess, that Giles is overly excited about the idea of grave robbers. Buffy’s response when he calls it ‘interesting’: “I know you meant to say gross and disturbing.”

6:43 : Chris Epps is played by Angelo Spizzirri, who passed in 2007.

6:54 : Eric Gleason, the surname coming from the Sunnydale High Yearbook, is played by Michael Bacall, who also had a part in one of this writer’s favourite movies, Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

7:34 : Quick question: if the science fair has mandatory participation, why are Buffy and Xander not involved? Or has a teacher told Cordelia a little white lie to get her enthused?

8:54 : In a lovely moment that’s easily missed, after Cordelia asks if they can deal with her pain, Giles pats her on the back with a barely sympathetic “There, there.” Of course, quite why she’s in the library other than for their sympathy is anybody’s guess.

10:10 : Willow does invite Cordelia to their activities that evening. She doesn’t attend due to cheerleading practice, but the thought is somewhat appreciated it seems – despite the activity being digging up corpses.

13:51 : This is the first actual conversation between Angel and Cordelia. The pair’s intense connection with go to the death… and beyond.

13:51 : Note Angel inadvertently showing his jealousy by wearing a lighter colour jacket, more like Xander’s than his. He looks bad in white.

15:48 : A funny moment that always raises a smile: when Buffy asks if the situation can get yuckier, Willow suggests that the criminals may be eating the leftover body parts. Buffy’s quippy response: “Question answered.”

16:37 : Xander is particularly bad moody throughout this episode, particularly towards Buffy and Cordelia. He’s snappy and judgemental, possibly because he is annoyed by Buffy’s behaviour the week before. In this scene, he’s almost cruel to Cordelia in places. It’s all foreshadowing their romance later in the season: boys tease the girls they like, apparently.

17:05 : Mrs. Epps, the poor lady, is played briefly by Melanie MacQueen, who predominately did work as a voice artist for video games such as the Robotech series.

18:52 : Eric sings a version of ‘My Girl’ originally released by The Temptations in 1964 and which has received several cover versions, in particular the one used in the 1991 movie My Girl.

19:15 : None of the photos that Eric develops match the positions or poses Cordelia, Willow and Buffy were standing in at the time they were taken.

21:00 : We learn in this scene that Ms. Calendar’s name is Jenny. Sort of.

22:15 : Cute character moment: watch as Giles walks away from Jenny’s classroom, after she asks him to the game: he gives a cute little skip in his step as he meanders back to the library.

24:24 : Darryl Epps actor Ingo Neuhaus had played opposite Sean Connery in The Rock the year before this episode. He would later have roles in Veronica Mars and True Blood.

30:17 : The football game and the grounds used were filmed on location at West High School in Torrance, rather than the usual Torrance High. That’s the real reason why we never see the football field again.

38:38 : Christophe Beck‘s score is all over this fight scene, and it’s stunning!

39:24 : Xander more than makes up for most of his snarky behaviour earlier in the episode by surprising Cordelia – and the audience – with his immense bravery when he rescues her from the fire.

41:00 : From this point, Giles and Jenny, as well as Buffy and Angel, become official couples…

41:30 : …which irks Xander when he wonders why he and Willow never get any dates.

41:34 : When Cordelia approaches Xander with genuine gratitude and charm in her voice, seeing something hidden and attractive in Xander for the first time, she tells him how brave and courageous he was…

41:46 : …and he dismisses her compliment as usual Cordelia snark! Honestly, that boy needs his attention span checked.

43:13 : A brief snippet of Buffy and Angel’s love theme, titled Close Your Eyes, plays alongside Christophe Beck‘s score as the pair hold hands through the graveyard. It’s just a hint, but it’s there.

Welcome to The Watcher’s Guide, a resource, quite fittingly, back from the dead!

The original website shut down in 2004, following the cancellation of Angel. But Buffy the Vampire Slayer was no flash in the pan. It inspired and changed the way television was made and 30 years later, we’re still discussing the show and hoping for something new from the creative universe built over 254 episodes.

Firefly and Dollhouse also brought unique looks at the human condition in a fresh and innovative way, with a science-fiction twist, just as the BuffyVerse dealt with fantasy.

This website aims to be the ultimate resource for the five Mutant Enemy produced shows, to preserve their legacy, their characters and share it with the generations that have come since…
