“Does that seem right to you?”

Played by Richard Brooks
First Appearance: Objects in Space
Jubal Early worked the Black with a bounty hunter’s pragmatism: the job paid, the target breathed, and one of those states needed correcting. He didn’t trouble himself with the morality of it. On Ariel, the price on the Tams caught his eye, and he followed that thread across the system until it led him to Serenity’s hull.
He was a creature of contradictions — athletic, precise, deadly with his hands, yet prone to drifting into philosophy mid‑threat, as if violence and metaphysics were two sides of the same coin. He claimed he didn’t enjoy hurting people, and perhaps he believed it. The Black is full of men who lie to themselves first.
River outplayed him in the end, turning his own ship into a weapon and his certainty into a trap. Mal finished the job with a shove, sending Early spinning into the void, alone with his oxygen and his thoughts — a man finally forced to confront the silence he’d always tried to fill with questions.
A hunter without a pack, a philosopher without an anchor, drifting into the dark he thought he understood.
