Buffy & Angel: The Chronological Timeline

Last Updated: 23rd December 2025

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe has expanded far beyond its original TV series, now including Angel along with a wide range of canonical comics and spin-offs that together form an extensive timeline of events, spanning from before time itself to the distant 23rd century. For reference, this chronology focuses on events leading up to the series, with a key provided below linking to each corresponding story in the series, continuing into the comics and beyond.

May 2004 – September 2005

Angel prevents Gunn from being sired, and the army is defeated. The citizens of Los Angeles retain memories of their time in Hell. Wolfram and Hart leaves Los Angeles for Las Vegas [After the Fall: Chapter 17].

One month later, Angel names the public library in honour of Wesley and Fred. Gunn, human once more, is protected by Illyria. Angel has become a minor celebrity. He is reunited with Connor [After the Fall: Become What You Are].

Illyria and Gunn travel to the Burkle family home, encountering the Scourge working alongside Baticus, an Old One from Illyria’s past. After defeating their enemy, they return to Los Angeles, but Illyria departs for destinations unknown [Angel: Only Human].

In an attempt to save the world from a trio of spiritual entities, Lorne sacrifices himself, dispersing his essence into music and saving the world at the cost of his corporeal existence [Lorne: Music of the Spheres].

Wolfram and Hart locate and recruit Drusilla [Alone Together Now].

Angel is approached by Twilight [Last Gleaming].

Spike encounters Drusilla and her lover, John, in Las Vegas. With Willow’s help, Drusilla briefly regains her soul but is unable to cope with the emotional burden, and Spike removes it. Drusilla is taken to Los Angeles and placed in an institution to heal [Something Borrowed; Give and Take].

Eldre Koh settles on Alcatraz Island. Despite initial suspicion, he joins Buffy and Spike in battle on several occasions [Guarded].

Faith’s father, Pat Lehane, arrives in London fleeing gambling debts. Faith sends him away. Drusilla resurfaces as a guru, removing memories with a Lorophage demon, before escaping [Daddy Issues].

In Santa Rosita, Billy Lane trains as a Slayer with his boyfriend Devon as Watcher. Buffy warns him against slaying with someone he loves [Billy the Vampire Slayer; Love vs. Life].

With Angel incapacitated, Spike and Faith team up in London [Spike and Faith].

In battle with vampires, Buffy is transported to Los Angeles by Illyria, now part of the Magic Council with Eldre Koh. They warn her Severin is working with Simone. Annaheed reveals that she’s a Slayer. Dawn becomes ill and begins to fade [Welcome to the Team].

Willow discovers a new Seed of Wonder. Using Severin and Illyria’s power, she accelerates its growth, restoring magic to Earth. Buffy kills Simone. The Scoobies, Eldre Koh, and D’Hoffryn barely escape. Illyria and Severin are vapourised [The Core].

September 2009 – May 2010

Late 2011

After 2011
After the climatic Battle of the Reckoning, the world is forever changed. The Slayers disappear and the connection to the Slayer lineage is lost. The world is overrun with demons and no new Slayers can be called [Ready, Steady…]. Without the Slayers to protect the world, demons inherit, humans become second class citizens. Technology continues to grow. Climate change ravages the planet, and human beings begin to die or mutate from radiation in the atmosphere.

Welcome to The Watcher’s Guide, a resource, quite fittingly, back from the dead!

The original website shut down in 2004, following the cancellation of Angel. Now with a new show set in the BuffyVerse eagerly anticipated by fans old and new and featuring the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, it’s time to spruce up The Watcher’s Guide for a new generation.

All the episodes have been added, along with notes, biographies and continuity references. But as always, one question remains… Where Do We Go From Here?
