“Ha-Ha! We gotta make this quick – the Spike Dragon is double-parked!”
Spike
It’s night time in downtown Los Angeles and a bank robbery is in progress. An innocent bystander is grabbed as the gunmen flee, but they’re surprised by the city’s protector landing, hero style, on their getaway vehicle. His name is Spike and this is his town.

The gunmen freeze in dread and fear – how can they possibly go up against Spike, the last vampire with a soul on Earth! As Spike gathers the rather beautiful bystander in his arms, an old man, clearly homeless, yells at him that he still has to keep his head in the game. The old man is silenced when Spike’s ever faithful kid side-kick Connor turns up to aid his mentor and guardian. As the heroes race off, the old man walks sadly away, lamenting that, once upon a time, he would have been rushing off too, with his own super-vampire powers…

Angel wakes up from the nightmare. He really needs to stop eating before bedtime. Nina is crouched on a nearby chair in the shadows. She’s wired, ready for action. Angel tries not to wince – that would give his humanity away – and Nina is thankfully distracted as she tells him that, for the first time in history, it’s actually snowing in Los Angeles!
On the streets, Lorne answers the phone to an enquiring Angel. One of his plans to augment the weather in ‘Hell-A’ has gone slightly askew, resulting in the snow. Lorne looks at the Groosalugg, who is clearly confused by this strange dust in the air. Angel appreciates the attempt and gives Lorne orders for potential patrols.
Coming downstairs into the lobby of the Hyperion, Angel gives them the plan: he’s taking Connor, Nina and Gwen out and insists Illyria is coming along too. The Goddess takes issue with this, but acquiesces – providing he finds someone suitable to stay with Wesley.
An hour later Wesley looks exceedingly bored. Spike sits opposite, waxing lyrically about Maria, aka Spider, and how their casual hook up has ended. Wesley asks about his relationship with Illyria and Spike bats it away – it’s not anything like that, he insists. And if anything Wesley says or does even bothers her slightly, Spike will end him. Wesley thanks him for that.
In Gunn‘s lair, he’s trying to wake Betta George up. He’s even let him out of his restraints which were dampening his full telepathy. He slaps the fish to wake him and takes him to the basement to meet the Slayers.
The Slayers don’t know who to hurt first. They hear George in their heads and decide that he’s dangerous. As they launch into an attack, Gunn urges George: go on. Use you’re powers. Freeze them where they stand. After all, he claims, we’re running out of time.
Elsewhere, a vampire has made himself a lord. As Illyria comes crashing through his glass ceiling, it doesn’t take long for Angel and company to file through the other entrances. It’s a short battle.
Angel and Illyria dangle the lord over the rooftop. They want any information he has. He won’t give up anything however, as he’s more scared of Angel’s enemies than Angel himself. Angel gives up. He looks at Connor: this guy has info? Connor says that he found the most powerful vampire he could find, but Angel is not impressed. They can do better than this.

Gwen yells back. He shouldn’t take it out on them because he’s busy recovering from previous battles. Connor was concerned Angel couldn’t take anyone stronger, the state he’s in right now. Angel shrugs off her concerns, but Illyria points out abruptly that Angel is avoiding fighting because he’s human.
The questions come thick and fast: when did this happen? How? Was it the prophecy? Was it something else? How long has he known? How long has he hidden it? The whole time?
Connor insists on getting him somewhere safe. Angel is not budging however. He knows what he’s doing. Connor sneers at him. Yeah, he knows what he’s doing alright – he’s punishing himself to death either way. Upset, Connor looks sorrowfully at Angel and excuses himself: “Now you understand if I don’t feel the need to be anywhere near you while you do.”
Gwen apologises – it’s been a rough week. She goes after Connor, ordering Nina to walk the ‘human’ home. Nina doesn’t move. She is willing to go with Angel on this one, because of what they once were. He asks Illyria, who confirms that she knew he was human because his scent lacked the power a vampire oozes from it’s essence. Angel then grins: if you can find me through my lack of power, then find me the vampires who are sitting on the power.
In Gunn’s basement, Charles is still yelling at Betta George. You can do it! Freeze the Slayers, or they’ll kill you. George insists he can’t, but suddenly, as one Slayer goes to kill him, she stops, mid-blow. Gunn is ecstatic! He tells George how much potential he has, but the fish insists that he can’t hold this. Charles tells him that’s fine, and plunges a dagger straight into her chest. The Slayer is still frozen – she can’t even scream. George is enraged – he shares her death groans with Gunn’s mind telepathically, surprising him. Gunn tells him he has one more thing to do: contact someone, anyone, outside of LA and tell them to come to them. And make it quick. Order someone to come there and stake him right now.

George sends his telepathic probe out and manages to reach some friends of his, who live just outside Las Vegas. They get a garbled message about Los Angeles being in Hell and his friends find the tv remote and flick over to the news: Los Angeles is absolutely fine!
Betta George is stunned. The outside world can’t see this? Why not? How? Charles tells him that it doesn’t really matter. The whole thing has been mapped out and planned ahead of time – everything that’s coming next has been seen. George, looking behind Gunn at something massive, asks him if he saw that coming?
Charles turns. Angel is opposite him on the dragon, heading his way. Aboard the dragon, Illyria points to Gunn’s building and tells Angel that that is where the power is. Angel repeats his plan: don’t let up until it’s over.
Gunn switches his face back to his human form. Damn it, he’s not supposed to be here. Not now. Not yet.

Angel prepares to go for the kill… and is stunned when he locks eyes with Gunn…
CONTINUITY
Angel had a similar dream about being useless while Spike was a hero whilst under the influence of Eve’s demon in Soul Purpose.
Spike’s dialogue in the dream sequence is similar to his mocking of Angel from a distance in In the Dark.
Angel is now being recognised in public by the humans, due to his defence of them in Chapter IX.
Spider declared her, rather sudden, love for Spike in Spike: After the Fall.
Betta George was knocked unconscious by a vampire guarding him in First Night (Part 3).
Angel refers to the death of the Lord of Westwood, Kr’Ph, in Chapter I.
Nina refers to her and Angel being in a relationship, which ended in Power Play.
