SYNOPSIS
Margaret, a wealthy and influential woman, dies suddenly while riding her horse. Her consciousness, stored by the Dollhouse, is imprinted into Echo’s body, allowing her to investigate her own death. Margaret, now inhabiting Echo, wakes in the chair and addresses Adelle as “Addie.” Adelle informs her that she is dead, and this engagement is temporary. Margaret’s last memory was from a month before her death, during her last visit to the Dollhouse. She suspects foul play, believing someone murdered her for her fortune.
Margaret attends her own funeral, posing as “Julia,” a friend she had mentioned to her family before her death. She observes her children, brother, and husband, Jack, noting their strained relationships and hidden resentments. Jocelyn, her daughter, expresses bitterness over Margaret’s lack of support for her photography career and accuses Jack of infidelity. Margaret struggles to maintain her composure as her family’s true feelings about her surface.
Boyd investigates the financial implications of Margaret’s death, suspecting Jack might profit from selling her prized horses. Victor, imprinted as a prospective buyer, arrives at Margaret’s estate to examine the horses. Meanwhile, Margaret learns from Bill, her brother, that Nicholas, her son, has a gambling addiction. Margaret begins to piece together the motives and secrets surrounding her death.
Paul Ballard, still consumed by his investigation into the Dollhouse, secretly collects evidence from Mellie, despite their growing intimacy. His guilt and frustration mount as he struggles to reconcile his feelings for her with the knowledge that she is a sleeper active.
Margaret’s suspicions deepen when she discovers that her favourite horse, King’s Ransom, has been tampered with – given steroids masked by a drug. Boyd confirms that Margaret was killed using the same drug. Margaret confronts Nicholas, who reveals he recognized her movements and knows about the Dollhouse. He admits to his gambling addiction, breaking down in tears. However, when Jack and Victor arrive, Nicholas’s behaviour shifts. He stabs Jack with a hook during a confrontation and flees.
Margaret and Nicholas retreat to her bedroom, where Nicholas suggests she write a letter implicating Jack in her murder. As Margaret writes, she realizes Jack wouldn’t know how to drug a horse. Nicholas reveals a syringe, confessing that he killed her for her money. Jack bursts into the room, and a violent struggle ensues. Margaret and Jack manage to overpower Nicholas, knocking him unconscious. Bill calls the police and an ambulance.
Later, a lawyer reads a letter from Margaret, exposing Nicholas as her murderer and adjusting her will to reflect her final wishes. Margaret uses the opportunity to leave heartfelt messages for her family, giving them closure.
Back at the Dollhouse, Margaret prepares to be wiped. Adelle reflects on the engagement, acknowledging Margaret’s temptation to disappear in Echo’s body. Margaret assures her that she has given her family enough to move on. As the wipe begins, Margaret asks if she will see her life flash before her eyes. Adelle, fighting back tears, takes her hand and replies, “Every single moment.”
