SYNOPSIS
Echo, imprinted as “Susan,” reads Briar Rose to children at a shelter. One girl, also named Susan, angrily tears the book apart, rejecting the fairy tale’s message of helplessness. The engagement, designed by Topher, places Echo as the girl’s future self, offering her a glimpse of healing. Through their interaction, the young Susan begins to confront her trauma, recognizing that she is capable of saving herself.
Meanwhile, Paul Ballard breaks things off with Mellie, knowing she is a sleeper active. Devastated, she is retrieved by her handler as Paul pursues his latest lead – Stephen Kepler, an environmental systems consultant who helped design the Dollhouse. Kepler, eccentric and paranoid, initially resists Paul’s demands, but when faced with the reality of the situation, he agrees to help infiltrate the facility.
At the Dollhouse, Boyd and Adelle investigate an encrypted flash drive addressed to Dominic. Imprinted into Victor’s body, Dominic realizes it may have come from Alpha, who has resurfaced. A search directs them to Tucson, where a mutilated body suggests Alpha’s involvement. Adelle orders Sierra, now an FBI-trained forensic scientist, to investigate.
Paul and Kepler descend into the facility, navigating the hidden infrastructure. Paul is stunned to see the Dollhouse first hand, while Kepler panics, wanting to escape. They incapacitate Topher and attempt to bypass security, but Kepler is unable to disable the system entirely. Paul moves deeper into the facility, searching for the sleeping actives.
Boyd, Adelle, and Topher decrypt Alpha’s message, revealing a cryptic clue linked to Tucson. Sierra arrives at the crime scene, discovering the body wasn’t killed in Tucson but was planted there. Meanwhile, Kepler manipulates the facility’s chemical system, ensuring the actives won’t wake when alarms go off.
Paul reaches the sleeping pods, disturbed by their eerie setup. He opens the first, finding Mellie – his realization of her programmed lethality weighing heavily on him. Finally, he reaches Echo’s pod, calling her Caroline. She opens her eyes just as Boyd appears behind him, gun drawn. A violent fight ensues between Boyd and Paul, shattering Victor’s pod and waking him in terror. Echo backs away, remembering flashes of her past encounters with Paul. In the chaos, she pushes Paul over the railing, allowing Boyd to restrain him.
In Dr. Saunders’ office, Kepler steps forward from the shadows, revealing himself as Alpha. He brutally slashes Victor’s face and confronts Saunders, eerily fixating on her scars. As Echo waits for Boyd, Alpha enters, and she recognizes him. He tells her he remembers everything about her.
Boyd brings Paul to Adelle, who mocks his attempt to expose the Dollhouse. She contemplates wiping his mind, but before a decision is made, Sierra calls in her report – Kepler is dead, killed in Los Angeles and planted in Tucson. Boyd realizes too late that Alpha has been inside the Dollhouse the entire time.
Echo is imprinted again, awakening with full recognition of Alpha. They kiss passionately – two rogue actives reunited. As the elevator doors open, Alpha leads Echo away, leaving the Dollhouse behind.
TRIVIA
Alan Tudyk, of course, played Wash in Firefly.
CONTINUITY
Dominic is brought back in Victor’s body to help decrypt a flash drive supposedly sent by the NSA. He was found out as a mole for the NSA and sent to the attic in A Spy in the House of Love.
Paul is shocked to see Victor in the Dollhouse, realizing that his Russian informant Anton Lubov from the first four episodes was not real.
After opening November’s pod, Paul reminds himself she’s a sleeper agent. This was first seen in Man on the Street and Paul learned about it in A Spy in the House of Love.
During the fight between Boyd and Paul, Echo’s memories from Man on the Street and The Target make her side with Boyd.
Alpha’s ability to inflict deep cuts in short time, mentioned for the first time in The Target is demonstrated here when he slices up Victor’s face in two seconds.
While panicking, Dominic mistakenly calls Dr. Saunders “Whiskey.” She mistakes it for him asking for a drink. Omega will reveal that it was not a drink he was asking for…
Topher’s tendency to install additional security measures in his lab and on his equipment, seen here when Alpha can’t log into his computer and has to find another one, will play a part in The Hollow Men when his secret security camera will help Anthony and Priya learn about Boyd’s true agenda.
