SYNOPSIS

The music pulses, lights flicker, and the crowd roars as Rayna takes the stage in full pop-diva glory. She moves like she owns the world, but beneath the glitz, something is dangerously off. A backup singer catches fire in a freak pyrotechnic accident, forcing Rayna offstage amid the chaos. A man in the audience watches, rapt, unmoved by the flames – his gaze fixed solely on Rayna.

At the Dollhouse, Echo and Sierra run side by side on treadmills, their lives stripped of any past or purpose beyond movement. Sierra falters, and Echo catches her. Boyd, still recovering from a wound that nearly cost him his life, argues his case to return to active duty – Alpha may not be responsible for the growing threats, but someone is. He earns his reinstatement under a warning from Dr. Saunders: someone is always watching.

Paul Ballard, bleeding but relentless, finds himself once again chasing ghosts. Lubov appears at his door, pleading for protection. Nervous, hunted, but still holding secrets, Lubov leaves Ballard with nothing solid – except a name, Caroline.

Rayna’s manager brings her troubles directly to Adelle. The singer is in danger, plagued by accidents that feel increasingly intentional. The letters from her stalker paint a pattern of obsession. In response, Echo is sent into the world of lights and spectacle, molded into a rising star with a single purpose – protect Rayna at any cost.

Echo, now Jordan, auditions for the role of a backup singer, impressing Rayna enough to earn a place in her entourage. At rehearsals, Jordan takes note of Rayna’s erratic nature – fixated on control, obsessed with every detail, and prone to explosive fits over the smallest disruptions. Rayna selects Jordan to ride with her, marking her as the latest favourite.

Elsewhere, Ballard follows Lubov’s lead to a club where shadows and dead-end conversations offer no clarity. His obsession with the Dollhouse thickens, the truth slipping further away with every step he takes.

As Rayna’s show begins, the stalker lurks unseen, assembling a hidden weapon. Sierra enters the fray, disguised as a contest-winning superfan, her presence unnoticed except by Rayna, who thrives on the adoration. The stalker makes his move, but Jordan reacts first – launching into action as chaos erupts backstage.

In the aftermath, Jordan confronts Rayna, sensing something deeper beneath the layers of spectacle and fame. The pop star doesn’t fear death—she welcomes it. A gilded cage has held her for too long, and she believes only violence will set her free. Jordan refuses to play along, unwilling to let Rayna manipulate the danger for her own twisted rebellion.

But Rayna has other plans. She invites Sierra onto the stage, baiting the stalker into action. Jordan, realizing too late what’s happening, tackles Rayna just as the first shot fires.

Dominic and Adelle observe from above, watching the mess unfold with calculated interest.

Backstage, tensions boil over. Rayna lashes out, but Jordan doesn’t back down. The idol wants an escape, but Jordan isn’t willing to let her destroy herself—or the people around her – to find it. When reason fails, Jordan turns to force, knocking Rayna unconscious.

The stalker receives an unexpected call. Jordan offers a trade – Rayna for Sierra.

Topher, oblivious to the specifics, grows more frantic, realizing Echo is acting beyond the scope of her programming. She’s improvising. She’s making choices.

Jordan takes Rayna onto the towering structure above the stage, meeting the stalker for the exchange. As threats escalate, Jordan makes her move, shoving Rayna off the edge. The stalker lunges, catching her, just as Jordan strikes. The fight is brutal but short. Jordan emerges victorious, Sierra is saved, and the danger is neutralized.

The show ends, but the real questions begin. Echo, even in her blank state, is evolving. Dominic warns Adelle – she’s a problem that needs solving. She disagrees. Boyd sees the truth – the actives aren’t just programmed puppets. Something deeper is stirring.

As Echo walks through the Dollhouse, Sierra passes her with a quiet smile. Echo subtly shakes her head, sending Sierra forward as others look on. Lubov is amongst them – he’s a Doll named Victor.

Jim Piddock previously portrayed the Valet in the Angel episode The Trial.

CONTINUITY

Echo’s doll persona bleeds into her imprint once more: after she knocks Rayna out, she repeats what she said when she kept Sierra from falling at the beginning of the episode: “Friends help each other out.”

Dr. Saunders is shown treating Boyd’s injury from The Target.

Topher reminds Dr. Saunders that Echo’s last romantic engagement turned out to be high-risk, as seen in The Target.

Claire also notes that being special is not a good thing. As Omega will show, Alpha attacked Whiskey specifically because she was number one.

Sierra’s handler Joe Hearn mentioned that the previous Sierra “got the job done.” In the flashback to a year ago in Belonging, Topher mentions having finished with her very last engagement. Both support the fact that the previous Active code named Sierra simply finished her five-year contract and left the Dollhouse.

Dr. Saunders tells Boyd Echo wasn’t always the Dollhouse’s number one Active, and doesn’t confirm it when Boyd asks if it was Alpha. Omega will reveal that before Echo, the number one Active was Whiskey, who received a permanent imprint after having been disfigured by Alpha and is none other than Dr. Saunders herself, of which she is currently unaware.
