Shepherd Derrial Book first came aboard Serenity at Eavesdown Docks on the planet of Persephone. He wasn’t looking at where the ships were going, just at the ships themselves. He chose Serenity, with a little persuasion from Kaylee. He told the crew he had just left Southdown Abbey, where he used to live as a Shepherd, a religious man. A man of the cloth. But there is an air of mysteriousness surrounding Book. For as a Shepherd, he knows a lot about firearms, from how to fire them, and identifying them by the marks they leave on bodies and shooting them to pin point accuracy. The bounty hunter, Jubal Early, when told by Simon that Book was indeed a Shepherd, there was no doubt in Jubal’s mind that he wasn’t in fact a Shepherd. Book however is a kind hearted man; he’s helped out the crew on many occasions. Despite being a Shepherd, he has had a hand in the less legitimate business dealings of Mal’s.
