The Groosalugg

“Pomegranate mist is the wrong color for this room.”

Once a feared and celebrated warrior in the dimension of Pylea, the Groosalugg — known simply as Groo — was a champion with a tragic twist. Born with human qualities considered shameful in his world, he was cast out and forced to prove his worth through combat. Rising to the highest honour as the undefeated Groosalugg, he became a symbol of strength and resilience. When Cordelia Chase was proclaimed Pylea’s princess, Groo’s fate intertwined with hers, and he fell deeply in love with the seer from Earth. Though his love was pure, he willingly stepped aside upon realising Cordelia’s heart belonged to Angel, proving that his nobility extended far beyond his skills in battle. Returning to Earth briefly, Groo tried to find his place within Angel Investigations, but the hero’s life and his unrequited love eventually led him to seek his own path elsewhere.

During the Fall of Los Angeles, Groo resided in Silver Lake alongside Lorne, who had become the self‑styled Lord of Silver Lake. When Angel arrived seeking guidance, Groo offered his services without hesitation, riding a striking black winged horse that seemed as fantastical as the champion himself. As the crisis deepened, Lorne reassembled the Angel Investigations team to stand against the Demon Lords’ champions, and Groo played a crucial role by breaking the chains of Angel’s dragon, Cordelia, allowing the creature to join the battle. Later, mounted on his winged horse — also named Cordelia — Groo charged into the fray and helped slay the dragon horde unleashed by Wolfram & Hart.

His courage, however, came at a cost. Groosalugg fell during Illyria’s rampage, one of many victims claimed when the Old One, consumed by fury, attempted to unmake reality itself. Yet his story did not end there. When the Senior Partners reversed time to undo the Fall of Los Angeles, Groo was restored along with the rest of the city. Angel later entrusted him with the care of his dragon, recognising that such a creature could not remain in the restored Los Angeles. Upon learning the dragon’s name, Groo delighted in the notion of having “two Cordy’s” to watch over.

Sometime after these events, Spike sought Groo’s aid in Las Vegas. True to form, Groo answered the call, arriving atop Cordelia the dragon just in time to save Spike from plummeting off a building — a hero’s entrance befitting the champion of Pylea.
