Olivia Williams

Couldn’t pass through Sunny Cal without looking up old Ripper.

Olivia was a girlfriend of Rupert Giles who came to America at least twice in the latter part of 1999. She knew nothing of his foray into the supernatural, and what she did know she didn’t believe. She was present in Sunnydale during the attack on the town by the Gentlemen and was terrified by the forces at work. Finally accepting the truth about Giles’s life, Olivia left Sunnydale, unsure whether she could live in a world as dangerous as his seemed to be.

Years later, with Giles’s death, Olivia attended his funeral and was described as “devastated” throughout the service. The following year, a resurrected Giles contacted her and invited her to San Francisco, where she stayed at the Hotel Luxe. By then she was based in Los Angeles and liaising with the San Francisco Police Department’s supernatural crimes division, drawing on her prior experience with the occult. Yet when she met Giles again, Olivia was disenchanted to see him in the body of a child. Though he assured her he was the same man she had known and pressed to continue their relationship, Olivia refused. She argued that his insistence only proved how different he had become, and that the apparent age difference made any romantic connection impossible. She remained supportive and continued to regard him as a friend, but the encounter left Giles frustrated with the limitations of his condition.

At his first opportunity to use a temporary spell that restored him to adult form, Giles immediately contacted Olivia so he could see her again, and the two shared a romantic evening — a brief return to what they once had, suspended between who he had been and who he was now forced to be.
