This insane preacher could very well have been a decent man once, that was until he was corrupted by the evil entity known as the First. The First’s secret ally and weapon, Caleb serviced the evil in ways never imagined: he tortured, raped, murdered and punished, and through it all his hatred of women prepared him for the time when he would come face to face with the Slayer. As the First made it’s move against the Hellmouth in an effort to dominate the world, Caleb arrived in town with the sole purpose of hiding the Scythe from Buffy. An ancient weapon that could swerve the fight in Buffy’s favour, Caleb failed to prevent the Slayer from obtaining it, but did manage to defeat her on more than one occasion, at great personal cost to the Scooby Gang: Molly was killed, as were several Potentials, and Xander’s eye was gouged out by the preacher. In a final battle, Caleb, empowered with strength from the First, almost killed the Slayer until she used the Scythe to end his days by slicing Evil’s disciple in half.
