Every Slayer has a Watcher, a guide to teach and train her in the use of her abilities and in the knowledge that every champion needs to thwart her enemies. Rupert Giles was always destined to be a Watcher, and in 1997 was sent to Sunnydale to become Buffy Summers’ guide. He fought by her side for years, even remaining after the Watcher’s Council, concerned with Giles’s over protective nature towards Buffy, fired him. Finding a place in Sunnydale as owner of the Magic Box, Giles eventually left Sunnydale when Buffy died in battle with the Hell God Glory.

Giles returned when she was resurrected, but would never permanently return to Sunnydale. He aided in battles against Willow and the First, and eventually, after the apocalypse was averted and the battle won, Giles began to reform the Watcher’s Council as the head of a new army for the Slayer and her kin.
